How Society Views Abnormalities
My sustained investigation was guided by the questions: What is considered medically abnormal? How does society perceive things to be "abnormal"? And how can one use anatomy to depict both of these perceptions parallel to one another? My sustained investigation is discussing not only physical abnormalities but mental abnormalities. Prior to the making process, I was heavily involved in researching anatomy and bodily functions. I met with medical professionals to better understand the mechanics of abnormalities and to provide awareness as to what I was classified as abnormal. I used the patterning of the backgrounds as a type of code to demonstrate my narrative. For example, in my piece containing the three hearts, I made a 3D background that somewhat resembles spikes. These spikes were put in the same pattern, except for some areas where the pattern subtly changed. I also used the concept of exposure and displaying what is underneath the skin as a way to show how the subject in the piece was feeling. Using almost entirely black and white was a way for me to show how narrow-minded people’s judgments of what is normal are, and to demonstrate the rigidness of medicine.
